If things had gone differently, Lionel Richie would be saying sermons instead of singing songs. At one point, Richie had aspirations of becoming an Episcopal priest. Choosing a musical career, he racked up impressive hits with the Commodores and his own gold and platinum hits, including the ten million-selling Can’t Slow Down album. Still, Richie’s evangelical leanings showed through in some of his pop songs. The most overt was the lovely ballad “Jesus Is Love” from the Commodores’ 1980 platinum Heroes LP. Beginning with a sparse, contemplative intro that includes only Richie’s intimate phrasing and acoustic piano, the tone is set for this sweet track that rates as one of the group’s best sides. During the track’s closing minutes, the singer is joined by a full choir that makes for a rousing ending. Issued as a single, “Jesus Is Love” went to number 34 R&B in late 1980.
